President's View

During the November 15 MWIF technical committee meeting in San Diego, the MWIF Board of Directors (BOD) presented our new strategic plan for 2002.

This plan is the culmination of a development process that the BOD began in early September. The goals and key activities for 2002 developed by the BOD will move us closer to completing our mission.

The objectives include:

  • Bring the core network standards of 3GPP and 3GPP2 closer together.
  • Create greater understanding of the need for and value of a single open mobile Internet architecture.
  • Increase mobile operators' understanding of the value and benefits of Internet-based solutions.
  • Increase the involvement of Internet companies.
  • Help create a plug-and-play environment within the RAN and between the RAN and the core.

Each of these objectives has a series of specific action items that will drive MWIF's activities in 2002. (Click here for details of the strategic plan.)

We realize that market and economic conditions are changing, but our mission remains the same. The operators on the BOD who developed the objectives are committed to achieving these goals to realize the MWIF's mission for the benefit of the mobile Internet community. We are confident that the five objectives and key activities outlined in the plan will enable us to impact the industry.

Year 2002 is going to be an exciting time for MWIF. Please join us as we continue to shape the future of the mobile Internet.

Warmest holiday wishes,

Dean Sirovica

MWIF Strategic Plan for 2002

MWIF UNVEILS STRATEGIC PLAN FOR 2002

General economic and key industry developments are significantly impacting the mobile Internet community. For instance, the Internet and telecommunications industries are facing economic challenges. Furthermore, recent events continue to impact corporate travel and, in general, companies are reducing and consolidating expenses wherever possible and focusing on core business initiatives. However, in the midst of this environment, development of mobile Internet services continues.

With this in mind the following general principles will guide MWIF's efforts in 2002:

  1. More emphasis on market development and education;
  2. Maximize value from MWIF's technical work;
  3. Increase operating efficiencies.
