The MWIF Technical Committee (TC) met November 13-15, 2001 in San Diego, Calif. The meeting successfully advanced many important work items and initiated several new ones.
TECHNICAL COMMITTEE UPDATE DETAILS Rich Robinson, Sprint PCS and Acting TC Chairman, opened the plenary session by focusing on a review of the meeting objectives for each of the working groups. He turned the meeting over to Nick Sampson, Orange, Vice President of Business Operations on the MWIF Board of Directors (BOD) for a report on recent activities. Tim Yankee, Mckie Headstrom, MWIF's public relations firm, also provided an update on marketing activities for MWIF. The entire TC then participated in the BOD led, Core Network Initiative Gap Analysis project. Nortel Networks, Cisco, Fujitsu, Vodafone and Lucent gave presentations. The successful output of the meeting was the MWIF Gap Analysis presentation, which will be utilized in the ongoing efforts of Working Groups 6 & 7 (Influencing 3GPP and 3GPP2) to influence the 3G Partnership Projects. Following the presentations, the working groups went to work! While attendance to the meeting was low due to current travel restrictions in the U.S. and abroad, many TC members opted to 'conference in' to the meetings. This doubled the participation level in most of the working groups. Working Group 1, Requirements Working Goup 4, IP in the RAN A first priority was to develop a four-step approach for completion of MTR-007 version 2. The first step is to define the target architecture (NRA) in terms of the separation of bearer and control and to define new interfaces inside the RAN. Upon completion, the group will define RAN-CORE interfaces and define the migration path from legacy RANs towards the target NRA. The group also continued work on QoS framework, led by S. Baba of Toshiba and Security Concepts and W.P. Lu of Cisco. Furthermore, a micro mobility solution was discussed, led by E. Troch, Siemens. The misalignment of the UE Geo-location entity also was discussed, led by Alcatel. Both of these issues were resolved. In addition, the group also is planning several key contributions to the 3G's in May and June of 2002. New work items for the group include RAN-Core interaction and developing message flows. But the most important new work item is to define a phased approach to migrate the IOS architecture in 3GPP2 and the UTRAN/GERAN architectures in 3GPP towards the target RAN NRA. Working Groups 6 & 7, Influencing 3GPP and 3GPP2 The presentations given at the BOD-led gap analysis discussion were all considered in detail and aspects of all will be included as part of the working groups' efforts to influence the 3G's. The next step for the group will include finalizing the Gap analysis presentation. Following completion, the group will create a set of operation and business requirements from MWIF’s gap analysis for harmonization. Finally, they will utilize the MWIF requirements to formally and informally influence standardization. Initial activities will include providing operation and business requirements for OHG’s harmonization meeting in 1Q02. In addition, MWIF operators will work behind the scenes to proactively garner support for the requirements. The work will begin on developing realistic incremental steps to meet harmonization requirements. Working Group 8, Interfacing IETF The group was key in initiating an IETF BOF focusing on the requirements and will continue to build on that work. Version 2 of the MORE Internet-Draft, <draft-reynolds-mobile-isp-requirements-00.txt>, will be revised and submitted to the March 2002 meeting of IETF. The operator members of MWIF have been invited to review this draft. WG8 is also working on writing a white paper to explain the business case for MWIF. Working Group 9, Applications/Architecture The group has almost completed its validation efforts and will now concentrate on proof of concept and cost and complexity of the MWIF architecture. The group has published a first draft of MTR-010, Architecture Services Interaction. The document is being reviewed by the working group, and will be ready for ballot sometime next year. WG9 continues to review the MWIF architecture and refine it accordingly. It hopes to gain an understanding of architecture advantages or issues. Rich Robinson closed the meeting by thanking the members for their continued participation and support. He announced that the first meeting of 2002 will be held January 29-31 via a combination of teleconferencing, video conferencing and Webcasting. The logistics are being used because of the current economic situation and travel restrictions placed upon our members. If you would like a complete account on what occurred at the TC meeting, all MWIF members can download the minutes of the meeting package from the MWIF TC Contribution site at mwif.org/contrib.
