President's View

Welcome to our inaugural issue MWIF Connects, the Mobile Wireless Internet Forum's quarterly newsletter. We hope you find it informative and useful. Please feel free to forward this newsletter to anyone whom you think might be interested in the work that we are doing.

The MWIF continues to cover the unique space of collision and fusion of two industries, mobile and Internet. We have a fair mix of interests from both industries. We are driven by the end goal of an elegant common network.

MWIF's Board of Directors are actively working to strategically position MWIF for the future. Activities include an MWIF Advisory Board, Market Research for and on behalf of the member companies and specific, strategic initiatives to influence the industry.

As you look through this issue, you will see that MWIF has been diligent in their efforts to develop technical specifications, influence the various standards bodies and disseminate our technical work. MWIF has several technical working groups who have conducted thorough, collaborative, forward-thinking research. The results of this process are the six reports that have been published and are available on our website, mwif.org.

We are continuing to work towards inclusive mobile and Internet solutions as we move toward 3G and beyond. Thanks to all of our members for participating, and we look forward to seeing you at our meeting in Kansas City.

Kind Regards,

Dean Sirovica
President

MWIF Member Perspective

WIRELESS NETWORKING EVOLUTION AT THE APPLICATIONS LEVEL
John G. Waclawsky Ph.D.

The Web is driving fundamental changes to application design, and it is becoming the standard for the construction of networked applications. Most networked applications have shifted from simple transaction processing to Web-based communication on the front end, and extensive multi-application processing on the back end. This is increasing network complexity, impacting network design and causing performance concerns, especially in wireless environments. Three significant trends are emerging.

MWIF ATTEMPTS TO JUMP-START INTEROPERABLE DREAM

Ray Hegarty
The451.com, May 3, 2001

New York - The Mobile Wireless Internet Forum wants to drag the telecommunications infrastructure providers kicking and screaming into the Internet protocol world, and in the process influence the 3G W-CDMA, cdma2000 and Internet communities to merge their networks into one. The nonprofit MWIF would in effect like to be the catalyst for the creation of a single core network that supports all access technologies, including wireless, fixed wireless and wired.

FORUM BRINGS INTERNET, OPERATORS TOGETHER

Sam Omatseye
RCR Wireless News
January 29, 2001, Monday

If the Internet and mobile networks tend sometimes to be a choir of discord, the Mobile Wireless Internet Forum wants to be the voice of symphony.

Founded in January 2000, the MWIF is dedicated to the merger of the two segments of the wireless industry by seeking a common core network.

"There are a number of forums out there, but no one looks bullseye into this fusion space," said Dean Sirovica, chairman and president of the forum.

CAN MWIF UNIFY CELLULAR PROTOCOLS?

Peter Rysavy

Some would say that following the actions of standards bodies can be about as interesting as watching paint dry. But if the wet paint was on a tool that could help your business, wouldn't you be interested in tracking its progress? One group well worth watching is the Mobile Wireless Internet Forum (MWIF), an organization working to simplify roaming between cellular networks and accelerate the shift to the higher-speed, always-on, packet-switched cellular data connections necessary for two-and-a-half (2.5G) and third-generation (3G) services.
