The Operator members of MWIF met together in the working group, Operator Requirements, chaired by Raziq Yaqub from Toshiba. Yaqub reports that the committee members showed great interest in a panel session on JAIN, Parlay. Future plans include additional panel sessions on topics of Operator interest. The Architecture working group, chaired by Mick Wilson, Fujitsu, is continuing to work on the Network Reference Architecture, version 3. All member companies are encouraged to participate in the on-going work prior to final membership approval on version 3, which should occur in October of 2001. Wilson tells us that the Security Task Force and the resolution of joint issues with Working Groups 6,7 and 9 are works in progress. The Internet Protocol in the Radio Access Networks (IP in the RAN) working group that is chaired by Parviz Yegani, Cisco Systems, reported that work on MTR006v2. and MTR007v1 is moving forward. Yegani says that an approach for introducing OpenRAN to the 3Gs has been discussed and decided upon. The group also proposed that MWIF should expand the scope of its operation to include protocol development in areas that are not of interest to other SDO's (3GPP, 3GPP2, IETF). There is strong support from the membership for this proposal. The Influencing 3GPP working group Chair, Karl Lewis, Motorola, identified the Services Architecture, OSA (Open System Architecture), Mobility across different Access Technologies and the OpenRAN as the specific areas where they will work to influence 3GPP. Lewis reports that the group hopes to make progress at the October meetings of 3GPP. The Influencing 3GPP2 working group is working within TSG-S to determine how to best introduce heterogeneous access network support - including handoff/handover - into the 3GPP2 workplans. Chair, Mike Dolan, Lucent Technologies, reports that the group plans to have an update at the Kansas City Meeting. The Interfacing IETF working group has acknowledged a formal charter and completed the IETF Delta Analysis (MTR-005). Chair Paul Reynolds, Orange, reports that they are continuing to discuss a possible BOF "MORE - Mobile Internet Operator Requirements" for presentation at the IETF Meeting in August 2001 in London. They will continue to identify key opportunities for successfully interfacing with the IETF. The Applications working group, chaired by John Waclawsky, Cisco Systems, continues to work on obtaining perspectives on APIs/Parlay/Jain and Mobile Operators & ISP opinion on needs and preferences on APIs. The group conducts on-going discussions and seeks resolution for service message sequences and discovered architecture and requirements issues. Waclawsky reports that the group has completed existing services flow activities and continues its evaluations of the relative cost and complexity of an MWIF architecture solution. Moving forward, the group plans to begin proof of concept activities.
