President's View

The first half of 2002 was an exciting time for MWIF. We are making significant progress towards completing the strategic objectives that we defined in the beginning of the year. I would like to highlight the activities that demonstrate our success.

IP Core Network Workshop
We are very pleased with the results of our IP Core Network workshop that we co-hosted with the Operator Harmonization Group (OHG). In May, we publicly announced the outcome of the meeting and received significant recognition in the press. 3GPP and 3GPP2 are currently working through the process of adopting the recommendations document that was produced in the workshop.

2nd Quarter Technical Committee Meeting
Another important activity this quarter was our quarterly Technical Committee meeting, which was held at Cisco's facilities in San Jose, Calif. Several members participated including special guests Janette Toral of Digital Filipino and Sai Manapragada of Mobility Network Systems. We accomplished a great deal including the development of several new working group activities and the creation of an entirely new group (WG10) to develop proof-of-concept materials for an open, IP-based, Internet style architecture.

White Paper Coming Next Quarter
One of our key deliverables next quarter is a white paper that presents a clear business case for the adoption of an Internet-style, mobile wireless infrastructure. A tremendous amount of work is going into the development of this paper by our Marketing Committee and our Technical Committee Chair, John Waclawsky. It is in its final editing stages and will be published soon. This paper will help educate the mobile Internet community about the benefits of an all IP-based, Internet-style architecture.

September TC Meeting Features Live Demo
We are also looking forward to our next technical committee meeting in September in Morristown, N.J. Our members will have the opportunity to view a working demonstration of a functioning core network based on an Internet style architecture. This demonstration will prove that an all IP-based, Internet-style architecture is technically feasible and provides numerous benefits to mobile operators.

The second half of 2002 is going to be important as we assess the impact of the two PPs working together towards our goal of a single network.

Kind regards,

Dean Sirovica

MWIF Technical Committee Update

JULY 11, 2002, SAN JOSE, CALIFORNIA, hosted by Cisco

During the 2nd quarter TC meeting, lead by John Waclawsky, MWIF's new TC Chair, the committee examined current activities and reduced tasks into smaller, reasonable tasks. Discussion centered on our existing working groups and the forming or re-opening of others.

  • New working group: Proof of Concept, chaired by Biplab Pramanik, Telcordia and Vice-chaired by Wen-Pai Lui, Cisco.
  • The Architecture Working Group (WG2) and the Applications WG (WG9) have split once more, and will begin using their old email lists.
  • Several new working group chairs and vice-chairs were appointed.

Demonstration of the MWIF Network Reference Architecture at Next TC Meeting
The MWIF Board of Directors has approved an offer by Telcordia/Toshiba to present a demonstration of the MWIF Network Reference Architecture at the next MWIF TC meeting, September 17 - 19, 2002. In light of this, Telcordia has volunteered to host the next MWIF TC Meeting in Morristown, NJ (details forthcoming).

We Need Your Participation
We encourage all members to participate in these working groups. Contact the working group chair directly for more information. If you would like to participate in the email discussion, please send a request to the MWIF coordinator, Mike Parket at .

MWIF Market Development & Education Committee Updates

During the last quarter, the MDE committee has been focusing its efforts on supporting and promoting the work of the technical working groups.

IP-Based Core Network Demonstration
The MDE has been working with the Technical Committee to help organize the Telcordia/Toshiba network demonstration taking place in September at the Technical Committee meeting in Morristown, New Jersey.

MWIF members and key members of the press are invited to see a live demonstration of an all IP-based mobile Internet core network courtesy of Telcordia and Toshiba, with assistance from MWIF's proof of concept working group, WG10. The demonstration will take place at the Itsumo Lab at Telcordia's headquarters in New Jersey on September 17, 2002, at 10 am.

Presentations will be given to explain and highlight the benefits of an open, Internet-style infrastructure. Participants will be able to visit various stations within the lab to better understand the individual components of the infrastructure.

For more information, or, if you are not a Technical Committee member but would like to attend the demonstration, contact Bridgette Brigham at .

White Paper
MWIF is in the final stages of the Business Value White Paper, an engaging white paper that informs mobile wireless industry stakeholders how an open, Internet-style Mobile Wireless Infrastructure achieves the revenue promise of mobile data services. Look for the white paper next quarter.

MWIF Booth at CTIA
Visit the MWIF booth at the upcoming CTIA Wireless show in Las Vegas this October.

The next MDE meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, October 9th, 2002.

MWIF OpenRAN

OpenRAN: A NEW ARCHITECTURE FOR MOBILE WIRELESS INTERNET RADIO ACCESS NETWORKS

A new radio access network architecture, OpenRAN, is based on a distributed processing model with a routed IP network as the underlying transport fabric. Developed by the MWIF IP in the RAN Working Group, the OpenRAN architecture reduces cost and increases reliability. OpenRAN is an architecture that can serve as the next-generation cellular radio access network.

OHG Review - IP Core Network Workshop

THE CONFLICT SHAPING THE MOBILE INTERNET

Two of the most dominant communications technologies of the last century are set for collision. Mobile telephony and the Internet have swept the world, yet their fundamental differences in philosophy and business models could lead to a fascinating head-on battle as each moves in the other's space in order to deliver a truly mobile Internet.
