For Immediate Release

For the First Time, Mobile Wireless Internet Forumıs Technical Committee Solicits Industry Feedback on Network Reference Architecture Cost, Complexity and Analysis, as well as, Proof of Concept Product Information

San Diego, Calif., September 12, 2001 Bridging the gap between telephony and Internet technologies, the Mobile Wireless Internet Forum (MWIF), a consortium of international service providers and advanced Internet technology companies, today announced that it has added a new section to the forumıs website for the purpose of on-going solicitation of industry experience and information. Currently, information is being requested on two subjects; the MWIF Network Reference Architecture Cost and Complexity Analysis, and the MWIF Network Reference Architecture Proof of Concept and Product Information. This new section can be found on the MWIF web site at mwif.org.

Industry carriers, Internet companies, academic institutions, research organizations and individuals that have worked with wireless network environments are asked to enter information that pertains to architecture cost and complexity, in areas such as performance, scalability, reliability, security, manageability and open features. In addition, respondents are encouraged to suggest other characteristics that may be useful in analyzing and refining the MWIF Architecture.

MWIF is also soliciting Network Reference Architecture "Proof of Concept" information. This would include beta and commercially available products that implement part or all of the MWIF Architecture in their design. As a two-step process, information gathered will be analysed and used to further facilitate Architecture adoption. Typical examples would include Authentication, Access gateways, Billing management, Communication Session Managers, and Global Name Servers.

"With immediate feedback from the industry and input from research and academic institutions, the MWIF Network Reference Architecture can swiftly evolve to meet market needs," said John Waclawsky, MWIF working group chairman. "This information in turn, can be used as a catalyst to further improve the time to market for next generation mobile Internet solutions that leverage the power and performance of the MWIF Network Reference Architecture."

The MWIF Network Reference Architecture describes and defines the instrumental architecture that enables IP-based solutions to be merged into next generation mobile devices. The Architecture Report can be found at mwif.org.

About Mobile Wireless Internet Forum
Founded in January 2000, the Mobile Wireless Internet Forum (MWIF) is as a nonprofit, international industry consortium whose mission is to drive acceptance and adoption of a single open mobile wireless Internet architecture that is independent of the access technology. MWIF and its members publish studies, discoveries and conclusions in technical reports that are made available to the industry. Membership is open to any organization with an interest in promoting the vision of influencing global wireless industry standards that improves interoperability of mobile technologies. Membership information can be found at mwif.org.
