Mobile Wireless Internet Forum (MWIF)
For immediate release
Keynote Speaker, Steve Deering, Delivers the View of the IETF and More at the Mobile Wireless Internet Forums Quarterly Meeting; Report Available at mwif.org
Kansas City, July 10, 2001 Bridging the gap between mobile and Internet technologies, the Mobile Wireless Internet Forum (MWIF) today announced the release of its Internet Protocol in the Radio Access Network (IP in the RAN) Working Group 4šs (WG4) industry-wide reference study, "IP the RAN within 3rd Generation Mobile Systems MTR-006 Version 2." This technical report on mobile systems considers specifically the UTRAN being developed by 3GPP (3GPP-UTRAN) for both FDD and TDD modes and the RAN being developed by 3GPP2 for CDMA2000 (3GPP2-RAN). Copies of the report are available for free at mwif.org.
"Acting as a catalyst to speed the adoption of next generation mobile and wireless Internet solutions, MWIF is excited to deliver this report in such a short period of time," said Dean Sirovica, MWIF founder and president, who is also the managing director of strategic technology at Vodafone. "MWIF¹s IP in the RAN Working Group has done an exemplary job of furthering the next generation of mobile and Internet standards, which stands to redefine the future of global wireless Internet business."
The technical report considers the way in which Internet Protocol (IP) can be applied in Radio Access Networks (RAN) within 3rd Generation mobile systems. The application of IP may also be considered for other mobile systems where a sharing of a common transport network between 3rd generation mobile and other mobile systems is considered beneficial to operators.
MTR-006, version 2 builds upon 3GPP, 3GPP2 and IETF to provide directions as to how IP can be applied within Radio Access Networks and to justify the benefits of IP as a transport option. The scope of the work considers the way in which IP can provide benefits to operators in terms of a transport network to support information transfers over RAN internal interfaces and RAN interfaces to the core network. The report also enables IP as an option for the Transport Network Layer supporting the Radio Network Layer protocols within 3GPP-UTRAN, 3GPP2-RAN and possibly other mobile systems. The report is a culmination of more than nine months of group collaboration, industry comments, and balloting.
Quarterly Meeting Brings Top Industry Talent to Speak
Sponsoring the quarterly meeting in Kansas City is member company, . Keynote speaker, Steve Deering of Cisco, who is also chair for the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF), will discuss 3rd Generation development from the IETF¹s perspective in his keynote address. Deering is the inventor of IP Multicast and the lead designer of the new version of the Internet Protocol, Ipv6.
