To date, the Market Development and Education Committee (MDE) has held two meetings, both via conference calls. The first meeting was held on January 9, with the second on March 10. Bridgette M. Brigham praised the enthusiasm and caliber of the marketing projects the MDE Committee has launched in 2002. Below is a brief recap of these marketing activities. Trade Show Participation Mckie/Headstrom Public Relations released the following press release at the 3GSM World Congress. “The Mobile Wireless Internet Forum (MWIF) And The Operator Harmonization Group (OHG) Support Mobile Internet Core Network Harmonization” Click here to read the Press Release. In addition, MWIF was able to secure seven interviews, which resulted in two articles regarding MWIF. The first article, published in Total Telecom from the EMAP Communications Group, was based on an interview with Nick Sampson, vice president of business operations. The article addressed MWIF's plans to create a single core network for the wireless Internet. Click here to read the article. The second article, published in the 3G Mobile newsletter, debated MWIF's plans for a single, IP-based core network. The article addresses the stumbling blocks MWIF faces as it works towards harmonization. Among them is the GSM community, which uses GPRS terminal protocol (GTP). MWIF's proposal would require 3GPP to switch from GTP to CDMA-based 3GPP2 networks. As the article points out, 3GPP has begun plans for its own long-term solution for an all-IP mobile network that is firmly centered on GPRS. Click here to read the 3G Mobile article. In other trade show news, special thanks go out to Board Member Nick Sampson, who generously volunteered to spend two days in France conducting interviews on behalf of MWIF. More recently, MWIF experienced another successful show at CTIA Wireless 2002, which was held March 17-20, in Orlando, Florida. This fall, MWIF plans to attend the CTIA Wireless show in Las Vegas, Nevada, as well as the 3GSM World Congress in 2003. Interested in being a show speaker? IP CN Harmonization Workshop University Challenge Click here to read the press release about the University Challenge The University Challenge invites graduate students and faculty from engineering schools throughout the world to compete in a contest of technology prowess and its practical application. Cash prizes will be awarded to those who submit the best papers addressing the cost and complexity of implementing today’s proposed mobile Internet architectures. Click here for the University Challenge's guidelines and application Business Value White Paper MWIF’s objective is to write an engaging white paper that convinces “less-technical” executives at mobile operators that they should invest time and resources towards the development of a single IP-based open mobile Internet architecture that is independent of the access technology. In order to succeed at driving acceptance and adoption of a single, open mobile wireless Internet architecture, MWIF must extend the awareness and understanding of our mission beyond the engineering community. Winning the support of these “less-technical” decision makers is key to obtaining the ongoing support and involvement we need to complete our mission. Completion of this project is slated for the end of June 2002. Marketing Chair Next MDE Meeting Mobile Wireless Internet Forum
