Members Include Industry-Leading Operators, Hardware Vendors and Service Providers
FREMONT, CALIFORNIA - July, 2000 - The Mobile Wireless Internet Forum has been created to aid in the establishment of a single, open mobile wireless Internet architecture. The Forum is comprised of major and emerging companies in the telecommunications, wireless and internet industries.
"The nascent wireless internet market can only benefit from industry-wide standards," said Dr. Dean Sirovica, Senior Director of the Mobile Wireless Internet Forum, and Director of Global Technology for Vodafone AirTouch. "Having a single architecture to develop for will reduce costs and increase the variety of available offerings, benefiting vendors and consumers alike."
MWIF will enable service providers and suppliers to work together to develop key specifications which will enable rapid implementation of Internet Protocol (IP) wireless networks. These specifications will allow for common infrastructure and services independent of air interface, and will enable seamless integration between mobile telephony and non-traditional IP-based services such as data, voice, video and multimedia applications.
Specifications developed by MWIF will be available to traditional standards bodies and other industry groups. MWIF will work to ensure that key regional and global standards groups address those issues that operators deem critical to early and economical deployment of IP wireless networks.
The Forum, which was officially created on January 17, 2000, now boasts 73 member companies. For more information, visit mwif.org or call .
The mission of the Mobile Wireless Internet Forum is to drive a single open mobile wireless internet architecture that enables seamless integration of mobile telephony and internet-based services (voice, data, video, web, etc.), meeting the needs of network operators and internet service providers, and that is independent of the wireless access technology.
Mobile Wireless Internet Forum was founded in January 2000 as a non-profit mutual benefit corporation under California law. Membership in the Forum is open to any organization with an interest in promoting the objectives of MWIF.
